About Ruth

Ruth Purves Smith, a seasoned artist, author, and singer-songwriter, has had a remarkable journey in the music world. Let’s delve into some insights about her life and musical career:

Early Days and Musical Beginnings:
Born and raised in Calgary, Ruth had a unique upbringing. Her family ran a Custom Wool Mill, which her parents started in the 1970s. The mill, now managed by her sister, spun rich tapestries of creativity much like Ruth’s musical journey.
Ruth received her first guitar in fifth grade, a Classical Espana, which accompanied her across the world, around campfires, and on horseback journeys. It has since been restored and remains cherished within her family.
Her rural life in Swalwell, Alberta, fueled her passion for songwriting and storytelling. She found a sense of belonging in this tight-knit community.

Musical Evolution:
Ruth’s music spans genres, from country to Celtic-infused folk rock.
Inspired by Fred Eagle Smith’s songs, she unlocked her creativity and began writing her own material in 2000. Since then, she has never looked back.
Ruth released her first album in 2010, followed by her second in 2016. Her third album, featuring all original songs, is set to be released in the fall of 2024.

Live Performances and Impact:
Ruth’s live performances are captivating. Having toured extensively, she honed her craft while touring the province with her band. Their repertoire included covers and classic country tunes.
Her compelling lyrics and restless, rhythmic sound resonate with audiences. She has settled back in Alberta’s farm belt, where she continues to compose music, write, and build community.

Ruth Purves Smith’s life has been a symphony of creativity, resilience, and heartfelt melodies.

What People Are Saying

It’s a beautiful thing when the song is true and the voice trustworthy. Such is the case with Ruthie Purves Smith as she shares the characters, stories, melodies (and plenty of wisdom) of her latest album, Piano In The Field. With a decidely rural perspective, Smith distills everyday emotions with symphonic importance, giving them instantly appealing grooves and hooks. Yet, as string as the music is, the highlight is the insight the lyrics bring to the human experience. Once you discover this voice, you’re bound to explore previous releases… and excitedly anticipate many more.
